Horizon Europe is the EU's key funding program for research and innovation. It is the boldest civilian R&D and innovation program in the world with a €95.5 billion budget. Spanning between 2021 and 2027, the program aims to increase the EU’s global competitive power through grants to research, development, and technology efforts, namely in innovations with the potential to open new markets. The research and innovation efforts supported by Horizon Europe also help in attaining targets in international agreements such as the UN Development Goals and the Paris Climate Accords.
The European Commission launches missions under Horizon Europe. The missions aim to solve the challenges we face in a specific time and with a specific budget. The five missions of Horizon Europe are:
1. Mission on Cancer: Conquering Cancer: Mission Possible
2. Adaptation to Climate Change: Accelerating the Transition to a Climate-Prepared and Resilient Europe
3. Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030: Regenerating our Ocean and Waters
4. Mission on 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030 – By and for the Citizens
5. Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe: Caring for Soil is Caring for Life
Any real or legal entity (such as SMEs, industrial institutions, research centers, universities, public institutions, or non-profit organizations) that has the operational and financial capability to conduct the research missions in their project proposal can apply to Horizon Europe. The program usually supports multi-partner projects with at least three participating institutions.
The Turkish coordinator of Horizon Europe is the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBÄ°TAK).
